The Carolina Hurricanes and Winnipeg Jets have staked claims as serious playoff contenters with strong play recently.
Carolina will be looking to continue rolling after its best month in nearly five years on Tuesday night against the visiting Jets, who are surging under the coach that led the Hurricanes to their last postseason appearance.
The Hurricanes (25-20-9) have won five of six and went 10-4-0 in January, their first 10-win month since March 2009. They were led to the playoffs that season by Paul Maurice, who has coached Winnipeg to an 8-2-0 record since taking over for Claude Noel on Jan. 12.
In addition to being just behind the pace for a wild-card spot, Carolina is also within striking distance of a top-three spot in the Metropolitan Division.
“We wanted to pick up points where we could. As an overall game, regardless of our record, it was a good month with some consistent hockey and a lot of hockey, at times,” Eric Staal, who had four goals and seven assists and was a plus-7 in January, told the team’s website. “It’s something we need to build on and follow up.”
The Hurricanes will end their pre-Olympic schedule with a four-game homestand, which they opened with a 3-1 victory over St. Louis on Friday. Anton Khudobin, who started all but one of Carolina’s contests in January, made 11 of his 27 saves in the third period.
“We want to have a good feeling going into the break and we want to sort of build off this win,” said Jeff Skinner, who scored the go-ahead goal in the second period.
Since dumping Noel following a season-long five game skid, the Jets (27-25-5) appear much improved under Maurice and have won four of five away from home. They’re averaging 3.3 goals while allowing 2.1 per game during an 8-2-0 stretch after previously averaging 2.6 while surrendering 3.0 per contest.
“We’ve made some pretty big strides,” said Maurice, who was fired by Carolina after starting 8-13-4 in 2011-12. “There’s still a lot to cover. It’s what we want our team to look like. We want to define what the Winnipeg Jets’ game is. That’s going to take a long time to do.”
Michael Frolik scored the winner 1:04 into the third of a 2-1 victory at Montreal on Sunday. Blake Wheeler assisted on Tobias Enstrom’s second-period goal for his 12th point in 10 games.
Third-leading goal scorer Evander Kane missed his third straight contest due to an infection in his hand and is not expected to return before the Olympic break.
The Hurricanes recalled goaltender Cam Ward on Sunday after he completed two starts for AHL Charlotte on a conditioning stint. He hasn’t played since Dec. 31 due to a lower-body injury, though it’s not clear who will start in net Tuesday.
Carolina’s Alexander Semin had eight goals and five assists in 14 January games after tallying 24 points over his first 38 contests. He has nine goals and nine assists in his last 16 games against the Jets franchise.

Charlotte Checkers Preview
The Checkers will begin a stretch of four games in six nights tonight as they take on the Abbotsford Heat. This will be the first game between the two teams this season.
Charlotte won an impressive game over the Lake Erie Monsters on Saturday, scoring two goals with less than three minutes left to win the game in regulation. Zach Boychuk and Aaron Palushaj have been leading the team lately. Boychuk had a hattrick in the last game.
John Muse has continued to be the go-to in net for the Checkers, but with such a busy schedule, fans will likely see Mike Murphy in a couple of games.
The Heat are fourth in the West, while the Checkers are in 10th.
If coming back to face the Carolina Hurricanes is providing a little extra motivation for Paul Maurice, he’s keeping that to himself.
After putting the Winnipeg Jets through the paces on Monday afternoon at PNC Arena, Maurice spoke fondly of his two stints as head coach of the Hurricanes and raved about the hockey market.
However, since Maurice already became acquainted with the visitors bench during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs so it was no surprise he was downplaying the quasi-homecoming angle.
“It’s not the same novelty as the first time through,” said Maurice, who has guided the Jets to an 8-2 record since taking over as head coach on Jan. 12. “It’s more being on the bus driving around the streets. Every city you never know where you are and here you know exactly where you are. That’s where I get the memories and flashbacks … where your kids went to school, my daughter went to school across the street. Those are the things you have memories about.”
One thing Maurice is expecting is a stiff test, as the Hurricanes have won six of eight games to get themselves right back in the thick of the playoff chase in the Metropolitan Division.
“One of the most-aggressive teams that we’ve seen in terms of their schemes and their systems,” said Maurice. “I watch them play a fair amount just to keep up with the guys and how they’re doing. I expect them to be at their best.”
Jets centre Bryan Little doesn’t think a win over the Hurricanes would carry any special significance for Maurice.
“I’m sure he’d love to get the win against these guys but in the brief time I’ve known him, he just wants to win every game,” said Little. “He’s an intense guy and he brings that same energy and intensity into every game that we play. I don’t think he’s going to treat it any differently.”
TEST RUN
Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec used Monday’s session to break in the goalie gear and mask he’ll wear at the Olympics while suiting up for the Czech Republic.
“It’s ready,” said Pavelec. “(The gear) is much lighter and as soon as I wore it, it felt comfortable.”
Pavelec will get the call in goal for the Jets on Tuesday, while the Hurricanes are expected to go with Anton Khudobin, who was named NHL first star of the month for January after tying a franchise record for victories in a month (10).
RETURN TO THE SCENE
Jets defenceman Zach Redmond returned to the scene of the horrific skate-cut injury he suffered last February for the first time on Monday.
Though Redmond politely declined to discuss the occasion, Jets centre Olli Jokinen took time to remember what the gruesome scene was like as Redmond left the ice on a stretcher after teammate Antti Miettinen accidentally came down on his right leg near the end of the morning skate.
“It was scary,” said Jokinen. “It was tough to see and not knowing what was going to happen to him. He’s a good kid, he worked hard in the summer and it’s good to see him back (with the Jets). It’s probably pretty emotional for him to be back here.”
AROUND THE GLASS
Four Jets — Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler, Devin Setoguchi and Toby Enstrom — missed Monday’s workout for maintenance but all are expected to be in the lineup on Tuesday … Jets prospect Brenden Kichton was named American Hockey League rookie of the month for January after recording three goals and 14 points in 12 games for the St. John’s IceCaps. Kichton, a seventh round pick in 2013, has nine goals and 37 points in 45 games this season … Meanwhile, Paul Postma chipped in four assists in two games as he began his conditioning stint with the IceCaps during the weekend … The Hurricanes are led offensively by captain Eric Staal (14 goals, 44 points in 51 games) and left-winger Jeff Skinner (23 goals, 38 points in 43 games) … Former Jets defenceman Ron Hainsey has four goals and 12 points in 54 games while averaging just over 21 minutes per game.
RALEIGH, NC – It’s never been billed as one of the National Hockey League’s marquee matchups: the Carolina Hurricanes vs. the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers.
But when these two clubs face off against each other Tuesday night at PNC Arena (6 p.m.; TSN-Jets/TSN 1290) it will actually be a battle of two of the loop’s hottest clubs. The Jets, 8-2 under Paul Maurice after Sunday’s 2-1 victory in Montreal to start off this four-game road trip, will face a Canes club that has won five of its’ last six.
“Any time you win those tight games, especially on the road, the positivity goes up in the room, the confidence goes up in the room,” said Zach Bogosian. “A lot of guys are feeling that, but we also need to realize that every game in front of us is also a challenge, too, and you get confidence, so sky high that we take teams lightly.
“We’ve won games by out-working teams and that’s what we have to do.”
Winnipeg, at 27-25-5, remains four points back of the Vancouver Canucks, who hold down the final Western Conference playoff spot and tied with Nashville and Dallas in points, although the Stars have two games in hand. Phoenix, with 62 points, is just one back of the Canucks.
Maurice, as was the case in Montreal and everywhere the Jets land now, was asked by the media here in Raleigh about the team’s recent surge and whether it is sustainable.
“I don’t think we’ve played our best hockey yet,” Maurice said. “I think there’s lots of areas we’ll get better at and some of it is through experience. We have a very, very young team here. There are players in our lineup that we count on that are in their first year and they’re just going to continue to get better. There’s parts of our game that we see great improvement and we’ve seen some real nice consistency in it and there are parts we all know we can get better at.”
A handful of Jets did not skate today, including Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler, Toby Enstrom and Devin Setoguchi, but Maurice said he expects all of them to be in the lineup Tuesday.
